Council member proposes term limit

A Minot city council member called for term limits while highlighting a pay increase next year for council members during budget discussion Monday.

“I want to have a public discussion about term limits,” Shannon Straight said. “I’m just putting it out to the public – in all transparency – I want to hear from them.”

His proposal is that the mayor or council members step down for a term after serving two terms.

“In my eyes it adds to building a little more public trust for this office and for the community,” he said, “and it puts the onus on the taxpayer to be more involved.”

Straight supported the budget increase that boosts council member pay from $500 to $1,000 a month, adding that he doesn’t plan to run for re-election next year.

“I just think it’s healthy for our democracy if we have people that will step up and get involved and I don’t think the current pay will allow that,” he said.

The council pay increase was proposed based on a market analysis that showed Minot’s pay to be well below average among similar cities in the state and region. Council members do not receive health insurance benefits.
