Maria Llamas, Minot, charged with driving drunk with children in the vehicle

Maria Llamas, 36, Minot, is accused of driving drunk on Aug. 5 with two children in the backseat.

Llamas is charged with a Class A misdemeanor in district court in Minot.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Llamas turned left from South Broadway onto 16th Avenue SW in front of an oncoming vehicle at 11:39 p.m. on Aug. 5. According to the investigating officer, the driver of the oncoming vehicle had to hit the brakes to avoid striking Llamas’s black Suburban. The officer stopped Llamas, who said she didn’t think she was that close to the other vehicle. Llamas admitted to drinking about two beers at a softball game. She failed a field sobriety test but refused to undergo a preliminary breath test and a chemical breath test. The children, ages 11 and 13, were turned over to their stepfather.

Llamas made an initial appearance on the charge on Monday in front of North Central District Court Judge Stacy Louser. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 30.
