Dayton Gotvaslee, Minot, charged with striking 11-year-old

Dayton Gotvaslee, 44, Minot, is accused of striking his 11-year-old daughter in the head on March 24.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, the child suffered a concussion. Gotvaslee allegedly struck his daughter twice.

Gotvaslee is charged with Class C felony assault and Class C felony child neglect in district court in Minot.

According to statements made in court on Thursday, the girl and her mother have since moved out of state and there is a family court protection order in place. Gotvaslee had allegedly been accused of domestic violence against the child’s mother a number of years ago, according to statements made at his initial hearing on Thursday. However, Gotvaslee has no significant criminal record.

Judge Doug Mattson set bond at $5,000 cash or corporate surety and ordered Gotvaslee to have no contact with the child or her family.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for July 25.

The report was filed on March 24, the state’s attorney’s office received a referral on April 5 but no complaint was filed with the court until June 6, according to Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher Nelson. Nelson said his office had handled the case fairly quickly.

Gotvaslee’s attorney, Andrew Schultz, told Mattson there had been court hearings in family court prior to the criminal charge being filed.
