Work is continuing this week on the relocation of the Ward County Historical Society’s Pioneer Village to its new location in Burlington.
“We have finally, other than one more load to go to Burlington and one to scrap yard / garbage dump, finished moving everything off the “old site“,” wrote Dan Caswell, a board member, in an email. “What a job it was. A lot of us worked 40 to 60 hours per week; plus spent hundreds of (dollars) of our own on fuel (and) equipment donations.
“We definitely are not done yet; as we have to put everything back together in Burlington, and new shingles on the school as they have blown off.”
Caswell said in the email that half of the automotive building is now up on blocks. The only buildings still be lifted onto blocks are the east end of the automotive building and the iconic large white Samuelson House.
“These (two) buildings will be up next week,” said Caswell in the email. “June 4th and June 6th are the projected dates to remove the large Church, Depot, both houses, and the Automotive Museum buildings off the NDSF grounds.”

Buildings have been loaded onto trailers at the Ward County Historical Society’s old site at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in preparation to relocate them to Burlington. The big white house, the Samuelson House, has not yet been moved.
Caswell said more cash donations and volunteer help are needed to assist in the move and to reestablish the museum on the donated land along U.S. Highway 2 and 52 in Burlington, which the historical society now holds title to.

The old water tower on North Hill, left, is absent its tank as it is in the process of coming down. It’s been replaced by a new 1.5 million gallon water tank, right, installed last year.
