Seven emergency responders honored with Heartsaver award

Four members of the Minot Fire Department and three members of Community Ambulance were recognized at Monday’s meeting of the Minot City Council for their efforts in saving the life of a 21-year-old Minot woman.

Capt. Devin Walter, Senior Firefighters Philip Anderson and Travis Elich and Firefighter Jason West were honored with the Heartsaver Hero award from the American Heart Association. Community Ambulance employees receiving the award were Christopher South, Carter Gage and Shayanne Tescher.

On Nov. 7, Minot Fire Department, Minot Police Department and Community Ambulance had responded to a southwest Minot location to assist a young woman in cardiac arrest.

The Minot Fire Department crew arrived on scene in three minutes, 27 seconds. Bystanders had started CPR and delivered a single use of an AED, or external defibrillator. Firefighters took over patient care, and the woman had a pulse when the ambulance arrived on scene. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital and has since recovered, according to information from the City of Minot.
