Arts in the Park features ‘The Five of Us’
The vocal ensemble, The Five of Us, will perform a concert of spirituals and pop classics Thursday at 7 p.m. in Oak Park.
The program is part of the Arts in the Park summer concert series presented by the Minot Area Council of the Arts.
“It’s actually going to be The Six of Us for this performance,” said the group’s director, Mary Muhlbradt. “Ken and DeVera Bowles are joining our four regular members for this concert, which has afforded us additional repertoire opportunities besides adding two exceptional singers to our roster.”
Under the theme “Embraceable Spirit,” the quartet will sing an eclectic mix of tunes, including George Gershwin’s “Embraceable You,” a Kirby Shaw arrangement of “When I Fall in Love,” and a medley of songs by Hoagy Carmichael that includes the well-known melodies “Star Dust,” “Georgia On My Mind,” “The Nearness of You,” and “Heart & Soul.”
“Hoagy Carmichael is one of the great pop artists of the 20th Century having composed hundreds of songs, 50 of which were hits,” Muhlbradt said.
The second half of the program will be devoted to songs of the spirit, including the Kentucky folk hymn “Bright Morning Stars” and a pair of songs by Shawn Kirchner, a composer and songwriter whose choral compositions are performed throughout the United States and abroad.
“One of the pieces is ‘Rain Come Down,’ a beautiful song about healing written after the Columbine High School massacre. The other is a soaring gospel tune, “Cornerstone,” which is a favorite among choirs across the country,” Muhlbradt said.
Other members of the group are Eric Furuseth, Cheryl Nilsen and pianist Rita Sundahl.
