Getting ready to show
Livestock exhibitors look forward to ND State Fair
Cattle, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and more – the State Fair has all kinds of domestic livestock exhibited and being judged for awards.
Jessica Podoll, washing her steer early Monday morning beside the cattle barns, came to the fair from Westport, S.D. Podoll was scheduled to compete in the Open Class Monday afternoon. She will be in the Junior Point Show Wednesday afternoon.
This is Podoll’s first time at the North Dakota State Fair. She and her dad, Joel Podell, are showing animals there.
“We show at the Brown County Fair, South Dakota State Fair and other shows,” she said.
Brooke Skoglund of Hecla, S.D., just south of the North Dakota border, is in her third year of showing cattle at the N.D. State Fair. She’s showing a Hereford heifer in Open Class and the Junior Point Show.
She said she and Jessica Podoll live near each other and show together.
Skoglund, her dad Jeremy and brother Trey are also at the fair for the events. “We promote for our sales this fall,” she said.
She said she has got to know more people as she comes to the fair each year.
Both Jessica Podoll and Brooke Skoglund will be attending South Dakota State University in Brookings in the fall.
In the nearby barn with goats, Lilly Solemsaas’ two Boer goats gathered round her as she fed them in their pen.
Solemsaas is a member of the Mouse River Stars 4-H Club in Renville County. She’s been showing at the State Fair for eight years. This is her second year to show goats. She’s also showing sheep and pigs.
She said she looks forward to coming to the fair each year.
