Downtown Bismarck gallery displays works by local artists

BISMARCK – The vibrant, expressionistic work of Minot artist Walter Piehl and oil paintings by the late Bismarck artist Gary Miller are featured along with other artists at the new The Capital Gallery in downtown Bismarck.

Located at 109 N. 4th Street in the historic Woolworth’s building, the fine art retail gallery opened in mid-November. The Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation also has offices in the gallery.

According to David Borlaug, foundation president, the gallery is an element for providing funding to support the Lewis & Clark Center and Fort Mandan.

The gallery offers original art for sale from leading artists in the region as well as pottery, jewelry and other items.

Other artists with work in The Capital Gallery include bronze sculptures by Michael Westergard of Plentywood, Mont. and the late Bob Scriver of Montana, mosaics by Lauren Donovan of Hazen, paintings by Deane Colin Fay of Gackle, and hand-blown glass by Jon Offutt and sequoia wood furniture by Steve Revland, both of Fargo.

“In addition to art for sale, the foundation continues to commission and accumulate collections that will be shown at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, The Capital Gallery and loaned to other museums and galleries throughout the country,” Borlaug said. Artwork by the late Native American artist Fritz Scholder is among the art being collected.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, its website is Thecapitalgallery.com.
