White Shield group to participate in event honoring WWII Marine hero

WHITE SHIELD – Members of the Joseph Young Hawk-Elmer Bear American Legion Post 253 and Auxiliary will take part in the John Basilone Parade in Raritan, N.J., on Sunday.

The parade is held annually to honor the late U.S. Marine gunnery sergeant who grew up in Raritan. He was the only enlisted Marine in World War II to receive the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart and Navy Cross.

Basilone received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II, according to John Basilone Parade information. He was killed in action in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

Sunday’s parade will be the 38th annual event. A ceremony will be held at the end of the parade to honor Basilone at his statue in Raritan.
