Smallmouth bass tactics

Bass anglers share advice

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Badlands Bass Bandits hosted a tournament Aug. 1 at New Johns Lake. Here’s what three of the anglers had to say about catching smallmouth bass:

“It’s different all the time. Today what we used were a lot of tubes, some drop shot and little plastic minnows. That seemed to work but it was just kind of a grind.” – Dan Martel, Christine

“The last two today came in the last two hours of the tournament fishing shallow around cattails off a drop shot. The smaller one we had was off a tube.” – Alex Martel, Christine

“We tried surface lures and they weren’t going at all so we went to jigs. As a matter of fact just a grub jig was the best for us, throwing in the moss. You’d get moss on your line but that’s where they were, laying in there waiting.” – Tony Reinbold, South Dakota
