Try Slothalon trying for five years

Submitted Photo Some of the craziness with blue horns occurs during last year’s Try Slothalon event. From left, back row, are Mike Doran, Sydney Bjergaard and Minot Lion Kaylee Bourquin, and front row, Lane Bjergaard and Sutton Bourquin.

It’s the fifth year for the Try Slothalon, which will take place at Atypical Brewery on Saturday, Aug. 20. The event is meant to be the shortest, slowest bar crawl ever, certainly not a marathon, from Atypical Brewery to Arny’s, with plenty of breaks and even a stop for coffee and donuts in between.

Tickets are $40 and includes a T-shirt, sticker and a drink at each bar as well as coffee and snacks along the way. Put on by the Minot Lions, the event normally raises $3,500 for its vision campaign and other community projects, said Kristin Michels, Minot Lions member and event coordinator.

It will start around 10 a.m. but will take people at sloth pace. It begins with some socializing and yard games, getting a drink, snacks and going another short distance for more. Michels said the event is fun and has the feeling of a school carnival for adults. It ends at Arnys around noon, with a gamble on punch board to win more prizes, Michels said.

Costumes and silly outfits are encouraged, Michels said. Participants in the past have shown up in group costumes, a lot of fun T-shirts and ridiculous costumes, including those with props, such as long blue horns and inflatables dinosaurs, Michels said.

Prairie Sky Breads, a block west of Arnys, will have an afternoon pizza fundraiser to enable participants to finish the Try Slothalon with a nice lunch, also supporting the Minot Lions Club, said Michels.
