for each physical client file varies ac-

cording to case type and disposition

but is usually at least three years

from the end of the office’s represen-

tation in the matter. After the reten-

tion period, the file is destroyed in a

way which preserves client confiden-

tiality. If you have any questions

about the records retention policy, or

if you do not consent to destruction

of your file under this policy and

wish to obtain your file, please con-

tact the public defender office that

handled your case or the ND Com-

mission on Legal Counsel for Indi-

gents at (701) 845-8632, or within
