Magi hockey falls short against GFRR, 2-1

FARGO – Time ran out on the Minot High School boys hockey team Friday as it attempted to erase a two-goal deficit in the closing minutes of its consolation semifinal game against Grand Forks Red River at the state tournament.

After the Magicians allowed a goal in each of the first two periods, junior Payton Philion finally got his team on the board in the 16th minute of the third period off an assist from sophomore Gabriel Thongphet to make it a 2-1 affair.

But the Magi couldn’t complete the comeback, as time expired and Red River escaped with the 2-1 win to advance to today’s fifth-place match. Red River finished with 24 shots on goal compared to Minot’s 21.

Senior goalkeeper Odin Nelson recorded 22 saves in a loss that marks the end of the Magi’s season.
