MSU volleyball swept by Augustana

The Minot State volleyball team couldn’t keep pace with Augustana University on the road Friday, falling to the Vikings, 3-0.

Junior outside hitter Shelby Spuller attempted to keep the Beavers in the match during the opening set, recording five early kills as Minot State trailed, 13-11. But the Vikings eventually pulled away, launching a 10-4 run and ultimately claiming a 25-16 win.

Augustana kept its foot on the gas in the second set thanks to a group effort by the Vikings. Seven different players from the home team recorded at least one kill as the Vikings reached set point with a 24-17 lead.

The Beavers managed to fight off set point three times before Augustana’s Avery Thorson delivered the backbreaking kill to give her team the 25-20 win.

Minot State had one final chance to extend the match in the third set as the two teams fought to a 22-point stalemate, but the Beavers couldn’t get over the hump. Augustana went on to score the final three points for the 25-22 victory and the sweep.

Spuller recorded a team-high 15 kills in the loss while senior setter Kelsey Dewulf notched a team-high 34 assists to go along with six digs.

Minot State will look to bounce back on Saturday as the Beavers travel to Wayne, Nebraska, to take on Wayne State at 1 p.m.
