Minot State falls to defending champs, 3-0

The Minot State women’s volleyball team ran into a brick wall on Saturday, falling to No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul, 3-0, on the road in a match where the Beavers never led.

Minot State kept pace with the Golden Bears in the opening set, piecing together a 6-1 run down the stretch to trim the home team’s lead to 22-17. But the reigning Division II champions of the past two seasons pulled away, scoring the final three points for the 25-17 victory.

The Golden Bears kept rolling in the second set thanks to senior outside hitter Hope Schiller, who recorded seven kills en route to a 25-16 win. The third set proved to be the least competitive as Concordia-St. Paul cruised to a 25-10 victory to complete the sweep and send Minot State packing.

Junior outside hitter Jeanne Brenner finished the day with a team-high 10 kills for the Beavers, while junior outside hitter Shelby Spuller totaled eight kills. Senior setter Kelsey Dewulf led the way in the assist department, recording 24.

After playing the past two matches on the road, Minot State (9-11, 3-8) will have the home crowd on its side for its next three matches. Next up for the Beavers is a showdown against University of Mary on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Minot State Dome.
