2018 MSU Hall of Fame inductees

The Minot State University Athletics Hall of Fame Committee selected five individuals to be enshrined in 2018.

The 2018 Hall of Fame class features student-athletes Kent Bloms, Jenny Castro, Tom Fredericks and Johnny Lester. MSU also honored long-time employee Bev Alex.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place during halftime of the Beavers home football game against Upper Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 6 with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. A brunch will be held in honor of the 2018 inductees at the Conference Center on the third floor of the Minot State Student Center.

Kent Bloms (Basketball)

Bloms ranks fifth all-time in Minot State history in career scoring and fourth in career rebounding. He was a two-time Academic All-American and earned All-Dakota Athletic Conference honors three times during his career. Bloms was ranked in the top 15 in scoring and rebounding in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Jenny Castro

(Basketball/Track & Field)

Castro was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball court. She scored 918 points, collected 552 rebounds and blocked 77 shots in her career while helping lead the Beavers to two NAIA National Tournament appearances. She was an all-conference selection in 2005-06. On the track, Castro was a two-time All-American in the javelin. She was a four-time NAIA Nationals qualifier in the javelin and discus and a three-time Academic All-American.

Tom Fredericks (Football)

Fredericks helped lead the Minot State football team to a conference championship in 1963 and was a First Team All-North Dakota College Athletic Conference selection as a tight end. The Beavers reeled off four consecutive wins during the season to win the conference title.

Johnny Lester (Football/Track & Field)

Lester was a First Team All-American selection during his senior season and was a three-time All-Dakota Athletic Conference first team selection. He was selected as the Dakota Athletic Conference most valuable player following his senior season. Lester returned five kickoffs and five punts for touchdowns during his career and had 23 receiving touchdowns, scoring 35 touchdowns in his career.

Bev Alex (Honorary)

Alex is Minot State’s longest-term employee. She began working at Minot State in 1966 in the business office. In 2003, Alex began working part-time in the athletics department. Alex is active in the Minot community at Second Story and Christ Lutheran Church and has served in the past 45 years for the Minot Eagles Auxiliary #2376.

MSU women’s soccer 10th in Central Region Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS — The Minot State women’s soccer team is ranked 10th in the first NCAA Central Region rankings released by the association on Wednesday.

The Beavers, who are 7-4-3 overall, are one of five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools ranked in the regional rankings. Bemidji State, Minnesota State, Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul joined the Beavers in the first rankings release.

The NSIC, the Mid-American Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Great American Conference (GAC) make up the 35-team NCAA Central Region. The top eight teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 9-1 and Nov. 16-18. Automatic bids are granted to the winners of the MIAA, GAC and NSIC postseason tournaments, with the remaining five spots are awarded on an at-large basis.

The NCAA Women’s Soccer selection show will be streamed online on Monday, Nov. 5 at NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m.

Minot State will resume its quest for an NCAA Tournament bid on Friday (Oct. 19) when it hosts Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. in Herb Parker Stadium. The Beavers will also host Winona State on Sunday (Oct. 21) at 12 p.m. in Herb Parker Stadium.
