Warriors snap MSU volleyball winning streak

Sean Arbaut/MSU Athletics Minot State junior outside hitter Jeanne Brenner (13) attacks the ball in an NSIC volleyball match Friday evening against Winona State. The Beavers lost 3-1 by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-16.

Emily Falldorf had 14 kills and a .310 attack percentage and Hayley Swain hit .400 with 12 kills, but Minot State had its three-match winning streak snapped by Winona State, 3-1, Friday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match in the Minot State Dome.

Though Falldorf, Swain and Jeanne Brenner had four kills each in the first set, Winona State hit .385 and edged the Beavers, 25-20, to take the first set.

The second set came down to the wire as Winona broke a 23-23 deadlock with a 2-0 run to win the second set.

Junior outside hitter Shleby Spuller notched six kills in the third set with Brenner adding five kills to help the Beavers take the third set 25-23.

Coming back with a vengeance, Winona State used an 8-2 run midway through the fourth set to go on to a 25-16 victory.

Sophomore libero Karli Koza led the team in digs with 24 followed by Mekayla Gurley with 18. Gurley also logged three assists. Setter Kelsey Dewulf clocked in with a double-double with 54 assists and 12 digs.

Minot State (9-8, 3-5 NSIC) will return to action today when it hosts Upper Iowa at 2 p.m. in the Minot State Dome.

Berryman

OT goal lifts MSU soccer

to a 1-0 win

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Senior forward Haley Berryman got her head on the ball and ended a 308-minute goalless drought in a dramatic way for the Minot State women’s soccer team.

Berryman’s fifth goal of the season was the lone goal in a 1-0 overtime road victory Friday evening for Minot State (5-2-2, 3-2-1 NSIC) over conference foe Concordia-St. Paul (5-1-2, 2-1-2 NSIC).

Audrey Wilson delivered the game-winning service 5:07 into the first overtime period on a set piece from 22 yards out. All three of Wilson’s assists this season have come with less than five minutes to go in regulation or in overtime, and two of them setting up the winning goal for the Beavers.

MSU goalkeeper Erin Rafferty posted her third shutout of the season by not having to make a save because Concordia failed to put one of its 14 shots on target.

The Beavers had seven shots, but only two on target — one from Wilson in the second half and Berryman’s timely header.

Minot State has played in three overtime games in a row, getting every result possible with a win, a loss and a draw.

The Beavers remain on the road to face Minnesota State Mankato on Sunday at noon. Minnesota State (6-1-1, 4-0-1 NSIC) beat U-Mary in overtime, 2-1, on Friday. The Mavericks only loss this season came against defending national champions, No. 8-ranked Central Missouri, 1-0.
