Magi tennis wins over Fargo North, puts up a fight against Fargo South, West Fargo Sheyenne

FARGO — Heading into the East/West Tournament today, the Minot High boys tennis team was in Fargo Friday to face Fargo North, Fargo South and West Fargo Sheyenne.

“We continue to run into some very good competition out east, but we are seeing improvements,” Minot High head coach Scott DeLorme said.

Minot won its first match of the day against Fargo North, sweeping them 5-0 for the victory.

Mason Diehl had a come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles against Fargo North’s Michael Hallquist. Diehl dropped the first set, 6-4, but was able to recover and win in the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-3.

Zach Diehl and Rory Taney won in straight sets for singles. Both doubles pairs also won in straight sets.

Fargo South took the second match of the day as the Magi fell 3-2. Mason and Zach Diehl won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Minot’s Ridge Jaeger and Peyton Huss went the distance against Kade Beyer and Grant Gillett of Fargo South. Jaeger and Huss took the first set, 7-5, dropped the second set but recovered in the third for the win, 6-2.

To end the day, West Fargo Sheyenne defeated the Magicians, 4-1. Jack Wolsky at No. 3 singles was able to take down Sheyenne’s Kamden Coles for the team’s lone point.

“We were competitive at every spot and even though we came up short (against Fargo South and West Fargo Sheyenne), I think our players learned we can play with the majority of the east teams which could be a major positive in a few weeks,” DeLorme said. “Tomorrow we have the East/West Tournament which will be another day of us getting to play against good competition which will be a huge bonus going forward.”

The East/West Tournament begins today at 9 a.m. at West Fargo Sheyenne High School.
