Bishop Ryan hires Coleman as girls basketball head coach

Bishop Ryan made an internal hire Friday, selecting Roger Coleman as the new girls basketball head coach.

The new position adds to Coleman’s role with the school, as he is also the athletic director and the head coach for the Lions football team.

“I knew when I came to Bishop Ryan that I wanted to be involved in both football and basketball,” Coleman said. “I’ve coached multiple sports at different levels and I think that experience will help.”

The hiring marks Bishop Ryan’s third girls basketball head coach in the past three seasons, as Coleman replaces April Nakatani. Nakatani led the Lions to a District 12 championship in her only year as the head coach last season before she stepped down on Aug. 16 due to increasing demands from a new job.

“I want to develop consistency with the girls,” Coleman said. “I know they’re a great group of kids. I want to be the guy to lead them in the right direction and help them reach their maximum potential.”
