MSU volleyball splits season-opening tournament

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minot State volleyball team opened up its season at the Microtel and Travelodge Classic in Moorhead, Minn. Friday. The Beavers lost their first match against Minnesota State University Moorhead 3-2 but won against Western State 3-2.

Moorhead took the first set from Minot State 22-25, and while Minot State was able to recover the second and third sets, they couldn’t pull out the win and fell in the final sets. Shelby Spuller led the team in kills with 12. Shae Pederson served up two aces, followed by Karli Koza, Emily Falldorf and Spuller each with one. Koza led the team in digs with 26.

Minot State’s match with Western State was a back and forth affair. MSU took the first and third sets while Western State took the second and fourth sets. Coming down to the final set, MSU sealed the deal with a 15-8 fifth set over Western State. Hayley Swain led the Beavers in kills with 13 while Kelsey Dewulf led in assists with 42. Spuller served up 4 aces, followed by Dewulf, Falldorf and Koza with one each.

The Minot State Beavers (1-1) return to the court today for Day 2 of the Microtel and Travelodge Classic where they will face Montana State University Billings at 9 a.m. and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology at 2:30 p.m.
