Majettes softball unravels late in WDA semifinal

MANDAN — Two innings away from clinching back-to-back state tournament berths over the last two seasons, the Minot High School softball team fell victim to a late surge by the Century Patriots.

“It was a pretty good game until the sixth inning,” MHS coach Gerard Cederstrom said. “Then, we kind of left some balls belt high and kind of down the middle… We gave up seven runs that inning with a couple of home runs.”

The No. 2-seeded Majettes (18-8) dropped the WDA tournament semifinal contest 10-4 to No. 3-seeded Century (22-8) after leading 4-3 heading into the penultimate inning.

“They hit some good pitches and hit them out of the park,” Cederstrom said. “That chased Marisa (Andrysiak) off the hill and we brought in Rylee Terrel and she closed the door. But, we still couldn’t muster any runs in the our next two at-bats.”

Terrel had two hits with a home run. Rachel Dockter and Jailee Britt each had two hits for MHS as well.

Madeline Grad and Malee Wittenberg provided the two Patriots’ sixth-inning home runs.

Century advances to face No. 4-seeded rival Bismarck High in the WDA championship game this evening.

The Majettes get a state qualifier game at 11 a.m. this morning against No. 8-seeded Legacy.

“We are playing one of the hottest teams in the West,” Cederstrom said about the Sabers. “They have been putting runs up on everybody. So, we are going to have to come out and get after it the best we can.”

Legacy almost knocked off top-seeded Dickinson in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, losing 13-12, and they defeated Jamestown 13-3 in a loser-out contest on Friday.

The Majettes went 3-1 against Legacy in the regular season. Three of the games were decided by two runs or fewer.
