Majettes capture second straight WDA title

The Minot High Majettes proved to be the No. 1 team in the West Region Thursday as they competed in the West Region Team Tournament at Hammond Park in Minot.

In the quarterfinals, the Majettes bested Williston 5-0 to move on to the semifinals. There, the Majettes swept through Mandan with another 5-0 win. To cap off the day, Minot High swept their final competitors in Century with a 5-0 win.

Century all-around gave the Majettes their most competition. Haya Dodin defeated Jaime Steppler 6-3 and 7-6. Raquel Egge had straight set wins while Eden Olson won her matches 6-4 and 6-1.

Kali Askvig and Alyssa Henson at No. 1 doubles went 6-2 and 6-3 against Century’s Sophia Holman and Blaike Zander.

Playing at No. 2 doubles for the championship match were Gwen Matthews and Joelle Fettig, a pair that has experience in tournament play and turned out to be the perfect match for Century, winning their matches 6-4 and 6-1.

“I thought we played some pretty good tennis, but today might have been the first time all year we put together a team effort of everybody playing high quality tennis on the same day,” Majettes head coach Scott DeLorme said.

DeLorme said the team’s depth proved to be a huge asset Thursday as they were able to go with almost the same line-up all day long. This gave them five realistic chances at a win in every match.

In singles, Minot’s Dodin, Egge and Olson all went a combined perfect 9-0 on the day. With Dodin and Egge at the top of the singles lineup, DeLorme feels that they are as good as nearly anyone in the state at those spots and they are tough match-ups for opponents.

“Haya bounced back from a tough loss against Jamie Stoppler (Cemtury) last week to defeat her in straight sets today,” DeLorme said.

Egge made quick work of every opponent before her. She cruised through the day only dropping two games in her three matches.

Olson moved up to No. 3 singles from her usual No. 5 spot. DeLorme said they were confident she would showcase her ability. She did that by winning all six sets on the day.

“We have seen Eden in practice battle our top players all season long and she is not afraid to play points against them,” DeLorme said.

Seniors Askvig and Henson paired together for No. 1 doubles for the day.

“(They) showed what they are capable of when they play smart and composed,” DeLorme said. “Those two girls are extremely experienced and even though they play three and four for us, we know they are capable of beating nearly every doubles team in the region when they stay focused.”

Hard work all year has paid off for the Majettes.

“I can’t say enough about the focus and determination our girls have shown all year,” DeLorme said. “Early on in the year, our focus was to get better every day. There were many days this year where the girls maybe didn’t see that improvement, but we as coaches saw it.”

The West Region Individual Tournament begins today at 9 a.m. at Hammond Park in Minot. The WDA tournament in Minot concludes Saturday.
