EMPORIA, Kan. — Junior Isis Cabral collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs, but Minot State softball team lost to Missouri Southern State 5-3 in the Beavers final game of the Emporia State St. Patrick’s Tournament on Sunday at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Missouri Southern State, which improved to 12-16 overall, broke a 3-3 deadlock in the top of the fifth inning with a run and held off the Beavers to claim the win. Minot State dropped to 13-8 on the season with the loss.

The Lions took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Angel Badalamenti hit a three-run homer, but Minot State got right back into the game in the bottom of the second inning.

With one out, Skyla Neubauer reached on an infield single and advanced to second when Amanda Izzo walked. Neubauer was erased at third when Melissa Estrada reached on a fielder’s choice, but Lauren Cowden delivered a single to score Izzo with the Beavers first run of the game.

Minot State cut the lead to 3-2 one batter later as Cabral delivered an infield single to plate Estrada.

After surrendering the three-run homer in the first inning, Laura Mendez settled down to post three consecutive scoreless innings which allowed the Beavers to eventually tie the score.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Minot State tied the game when Cabral singled down the left field line which brought home Izzo and knotted the score at 3-3.

Missouri Southern State responded in the top of the fifth inning and regained the lead at 4-3 on an RBI single by Erika Lutgen. The Lions tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning to push the lead to 5-3.

The Beavers had the tying run on base in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Taurean Guzman retired the final seven batters of the game to pick up her fourth save of the season.

Cabral finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Cowden, Ashley Hill, Kyla Larson, Neubauer and Izzo each recorded a base hit.

Mendez worked 5.0 innings and allowed four runs, while Kylie Patrick pitched the final two innings and permitted just an unearned run.
