Wahlstrom named girls state hockey Coach of the Year
Minot High School girls hockey coach Weylin Wahlstrom was named the Coach of the Year in the state of North Dakota following the conclusion of the state tournament in Grand Forks.
The Majettes (14-12-0) lost in the fifth-place game to Dickinson on Saturday, 4-1, to conclude their season. But, it’s the growth of the team through the season that normally distinguish who receives Coach of the Year honors.
The improvement of the Majettes was apparent in the handful of close games they played throughout the regular season against the teams at the top of the state standings.
Weylin, in his seventh season as the head coach, coached No. 5-seeded MHS to a 2-0 and a 5-2 loss to four-time defending state champions Bismarck, a 4-1 defeat to state runner-up Fargo North/South and a win over No. 4-seeded Fargo Davies, 4-2.
Minot was 13-0 this season when scoring four or more goals.
The Majettes also had a relatively young core and graduate just two seniors.
