Minot High earns spot in West Region tournament over Turtle Mountain

Ashton Gerard/MDN Minot High's Alli McCoy (14) goes for a layup Friday during a high school girls basketball against Turtle Mountain at Magic City Campus.

The Minot High School girls basketball team played Turtle Mountain Friday to earn their spot in the West Region basketball tournament. The Majettes bested the Bravettes 63-45.

Minot High last faced the Bravettes Tuesday, where they scored a school record-breaking 88 points, but couldn’t bring the heat back to the play-in game on their home court.

Allie Nelson had a big start to the game for the Majettes, scoring 15 of the team’s 36 points earned in the first half. Their defense held the Bravettes to 17 points in the first half.

During the second half, the Bravettes earned 28 points, outscoring Minot by one. Minot, however, remained ahead and is taking their victory to Bismarck on March 1 to compete in the West Region tournament.

Nelson led the team in scoring with 23 points, followed by Alli McCoy with 16 and Brenna Tschetter with 8.

The Majettes, seeded seventh, will play No. 2 Bismarck St. Mary’s at 5:30 p.m. at the Bismarck Event Center on March 1. The pair split their games this season, Bismarck St. Mary’s winning at home Dec. 5, 71-31, and Minot High winning at home Feb. 13, 59-55 in overtime.
