Beavers softball splits day one of Bubble Invitational
Kyla Larson hit a go-ahead double in the top of the seventh inning lifting Minot State to a 6-4 victory over Minnesota Crookston and a split of its two games on day one of the Bubble Invitational on Saturday in the Air-Supported Dome at Herb Parker Stadium.
Tied at 4-4 entering the top of the seventh inning, Isis Cabral hit a two-out triple and Larson followed with a double to right giving the Beavers a 5-4 lead. Haley Hernandez then singled to center to score Larson and increase the Minot State lead to 6-4.
Kylie Patrick, who earned the win in relief, worked around a one-out walk to nail down the win for the Beavers. Patrick improved to 7-1 on the season for the Beavers with the win.
Larson, Hernandez and Lauren Cowden each had two hits for Minot State, while Julia Suchan, Ashley Hill, Cabral and Sami Jo Henry each had one hit.
Minot State, which improved to 11-3 on the season, scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Minnesota Crookston responded by scoring four times in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
The Beavers rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cowden singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a stolen base and a Golden Eagles throwing error. Suchan walked and stole second base and Cowden came in to score on a throwing error to cut the lead to 4-3.
One out later, Hill ripped a double to left to plate Suchan and tie the score at 4-4 setting the stage for the seventh-inning rally.
Minot State saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end in the first game of the day as the Beavers lost to Carroll 10-6.
Suchan was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Tori Zimmermann, Camille Greene and Skyla Neubauer each had two hits for the Beavers. Cowden, Hill, Cabral and Henry each recorded a hit in the first game.
Minot State fell behind 7-0 after three innings before rallying back into the game.
The Beavers scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI triple by Cowden, and RBI singles by Suchan and Hill to cut the lead to 7-3.
Minot State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run single by Suchan which trimmed the lead to 7-5.
Carroll responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to push the margin to 10-5. Minot State got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run by Cabral, but that would be as close as the Beavers would get.
Minot State will return to action on today for two more games in the Air-Supported Dome. The Beavers will face Minnesota Crookston at 10 a.m. and conclude tournament play against Carroll at 2 p.m.
