MSU baseball picked eighth in NSIC preseason poll
BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Minot State baseball team was selected to finish eighth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll as voted upon by the league head coaches and announced by the conference office on Thursday.
The Beavers received 110 points to finish eighth overall in the poll while Minnesota State received 14 first-place votes and are the preseason favorite to capture the conference title with 196 points. This marks the eighth time in the last nine years that the Mavericks have been picked to win the NSIC.
Augustana earned one first-place vote 177 points to finish second while St. Cloud State totaled 174 points to finish third.
Wayne State tallied 141 points and Concordia-St. Paul registered 138 points to cap the top five on the preseason poll.
Senior Justin Demary and junior Michael Borst were tabbed as Players to Watch in the NSIC this season.
Demary, a utility player and pitcher, batted .376 with 11 doubles and 11 RBI while scoring 30 runs last season. The Lake Charles, La. native posted a 6-2 record with nine starts and 13 appearances on the mound. Demary notched a 3.19 ERA and tallied 48 strikeouts in 67.2 innings of work.
Borst, a first baseman and outfielder, earned All-NSIC Second Team honors after finishing second in the NSIC with 59 RBI and hitting .359 with a team-high six home runs, three triples and 10 doubles. The McHenry, Ill. native started 49 games last season and was one of four Beavers to start in 49 or more games.
Head coach Scott Eul enters his second season leading the Minot State program and returns seven starters and 18 letterwinners from last season’s squad that posted a record of 29-22.
Minot State opens the 2018 on the road with a four-game series in Pittsburg, Kan. at Pittsburg State on Feb. 16-18, 2018.
