State track and field: Making it to the finals

BISMARCK – For many the running events on Friday at the state track and field meet, the goal was getting to Saturday. A spot in the finals required a good run in the preliminaries.

Here are the local Minot-area athletes who made the cut to racing again today at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

Class A boys

The Minot High boys track team qualified four athletes and two relays on Friday for seven events.

Junior Logan Goheen was the only Magi to win a preliminary, holding true to his seed ranking by taking the 400-meter run by a couple of steps.

Photo special to MDN/Al Christianson Stanley-Powers Lake sophomore Jaydin Legg takes the first leg of the 4x100 relay. The Blue Jays qualified with a four-place time of 44.67 seconds.

“Tonight we will talk to the guys and say ‘You got the top seed, but that doesn’t mean anything,’ “ MHS coach Aaron Klingbeil said. “We got to come back tomorrow (and compete). But, it’s good knowing that they are capable and if the guys are feeling good about what’s going on.”

Senior sprinter Manuel Bradford couldn’t catch a break with three second-place finishes in the 100, 200 and 300-hurdles. Racing against Bradford, junior Adrian Davis-Aguilar qualified in the 200 with a sixth-place finish.

Both helped the 4×100 and 4×200 relays to qualify, both taking fifth.

Senior Preston Johnson just made the cut in the 110-meter hurdles by coming in ninth.

Team scores wise, the Magi are in the fourth with 20 points. Right about where Klingbeil envisioned them being.

“You look at the projected points and we hit everything that we were hoping to do or better,” he said. “We are hoping to be in the Top 3 fighting it out with some of those guys.”

Class A girls

The Minot High Majettes didn’t have a lot of high seeded individuals/relays coming into the meet, but they qualified in the four events that they should have based on their seed times.

A part of all four of those events are junior Alli McCoy. The speedster qualified individually in both the 100 and 200, and she also took the baton first in helping qualify the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

The trio of Morgan Alexander, Joree Obergfell and Elise Klein assisted McCoy in both relays.

The Majettes are tied for fifth place in the team standing with 20 points, but likely won’t hang on to the position with the lack of athletes competing for points on Day 2.

Class B boys

It was a promising showing from the Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark track boys to put themselves in position to challenge for at least four state titles today.

The 4×200 relay team of Tyson Akers, Mark Medalen, Tommy Burke and Josh Knutson set the tone early in the day by beating out Dickinson Trinity by over a second and a half.

Knutson carried the form over to post the fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles and Medalen did the same in the half mile. Knutson also took second in the longer 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the 200. Medalen also qualified in the 100 and 200, as did the DLBLC’s 4×100 relay.

Rugby qualified its 4×100 (taking first place) and 4×200 relays, plus Kaden Jaeger made the cut to race in the 100.

Kenmare junior Jacob Rodin took third in the half mile and will also race in the finals of the 800 today as the No. 1 favorite.

Stanley-Powers Lake qualified its short 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

SPL is in fourth place in the team standings with 10 points, Harvey/Wells County in 22nd with three points and Glenburn 24th with two points.

Class B girls

Senior Kari Wolfe from Harvey/Wells County swept the 100 and 200 preliminaries, and helped qualify the 4×100 relay team. While April Hagemeister qualified in the 200 and 300 hurdles, and helped qualify the 4×200 relay team.

DLBLC junior Caitlyn Vogel was on the cusp of making her three individual events based on seed times, but qualified for all three (100, 200 and 400). The Lakers 4×200 relay team with Vogel, Trisha Billadeau, Kyle Lauf and Brooke Bailey took seventh to claim a spot in the finals.

Rugby freshman Kristina Brossart qualified in the 100 and aided the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.

Other individual qualifiers included Garrison-Max’s Kaityln Klein (100), New Rockford-Sheyenne’s Hannah Haley (300 hurdles), Parshall’s Cedar Hall (400) and Velva-Drake/Anamoose-Sawyer’s Elizabeth Massine (400).

Rugby is the highest area team in the team standing being tied for third place with 16 points followed by sixth Westhope/Newburg (10), 15th Parshall (5) and 23rd Harvey/Wells County (1).
