Ryan softball fends off upset-minded Mandan

JAMESTOWN — The first round of a regional tournament for the No. 1 seed is usually a stress-free win. The Bishop Ryan softball team didn’t get that, at least not right away, on Thursday at the West Region tournament.

Tied 4-4 after three innings, the top-seeded Lions finally pulled away from No. 9 Mandan, 11-4, to move one win away from clinch a state tournament berth.

Ryan opened the contest with four runs in the first inning in support of starting pitcher Emma Garber. The Braves, whom won a play-in game against No. 8 Williston to make the tournament, countered with a pair of runs in the second and third innings.

Five hits and two errors contributed to the critical seven-run, fourth inning for the Lions to put Mandan away.

Shayla Elm, Hailee Jundt and Abbie McKay each notched two hits in the victory, while Eden Kramer, Annika Stewart, Garber, McKay and Jundt picked up the RBIs. The Lions outhit the Braves 10-4.

Mandan’s defense struggled with five errors. Ryan was flawless in backing up their pitcher.

Garber pitched a complete game, striking out six batters. Sierra Butler went the distance for Mandan in the circle.

Ryan advances to the semifinals to take on No. 5 Bismarck High at 3 p.m. in Jamestown.

Big inning dooms Majettes softball

JAMESTOWN — One inning made the difference Thursday afternoon in the West Region softball tournament for Minot High School. Leading 1-0, the No. 4-seeded Majettes gave up a seven-run fourth inning to No. 5-seeded Bismarck High to fall 7-1 in the first round.

The Majettes scored their only run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI triple from Rylee Terrel to score Jaycie Rostad.

The Demons answered in their following at-bats, scoring seven runs on just three hits and one Minot error. The four walks from starting pitcher Marisa Andrysiak didn’t help either.

Emily Omvig provided a two-run single and pitcher Jaime Barta, Emma Steckler and Emma Barta each collected an RBI.

Bismarck outhit Minot 9-4, but committed one more error (4-3). Emily Melom, Brianna Walker and Rostad had the other three hits for the Majettes alongside Terrel.

Jaime Barta and Andrysiak each pitched complete games in the circle.

The Majettes move to the loser out side of the bracket to face No. 9 Mandan with their season on the line this morning at 11 a.m. in Jamestown.
