Local teams struggle in long distance running finals

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot High’s Gabe Hegstad (6) and Carson Tofteland take off from the start line in the Class A boys 1,600 meter final. Hegstad placed fifth with a time of 4:30.03.

BISMARCK – The mile run and 4×800 relay were the only two running events to have finals on Friday at the state track and field meet in Bismarck.

Across Class A, Class B, boys and girls from the Minot-area teams couldn’t quite keep up at the longer distances. Minot High senior Gabe Hegstad was the only individual or relay team to crack the top five.

Hegstad took fifth in the Class A boys mile with a time of four minutes and 30.03 seconds. Fargo Davies’ Hunter Lucas won the event with a time of 4:13.81.

“The wind was a big factor in the race and we kind of had to adjust for that right away,” Hegstad said. “We ran a slower first lap, but after that the race settled in and the last lap I kicked in the last (300 meters) and brought it in.”

His coach Aaron Klingbeil added: “The mile went well for us. We were happy with how it turned out.”

Hegstad was also a part of the sixth place 4×800 relay team with David Maza, Austin Folk and Logan Goheen. Folk took 10th in the mile.

The Majettes 4×800 relay team (Abigail Haffarth, Brooke Nelson, Allie Nelson and Allie Wahlund) got a point for their team with an eighth-place finish.

Harvey/Wells County’s MacKenna Arnold did the same with an eighth in the Class B girls mile.

Two records were broken in the 4×800 relays. In the Class A girls division, Legacy, with the team of Peyton Jensen, Kaydee Wescom, Jadyn Guidinger and Lindsey Werner, broke the overall meet record with a time of 9:22.68, beating the previous mark of 9:28.55 set by Century in 2015.

The Class B New Town boys broke a Class B meet record by roughly three seconds as well. Chace Hale, Robert White, Jalen Chase and Ryan Wheeling posted a time of 8:02.29 to smash the long-standing record set in 1991 by Standing Rock (8:05.76).

The 300-meter hurdles kick off the rest of the running event finals today at 11 a.m.
