MSU golfer Dumes leads after first round in Montana

BILLINGS, Mont. — Minot State University Miriam Dumes shot a 3-over-par 75 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Montana State Billings Yellowjacket Spring Invite, played at Lake Hills Golf Course Monday.

“Miriam seems to be hitting her stride now,” MSU coach Spencer Hilde said. “She made three birdies today and had twice as many good looks at birdie that didn’t quite fall for her.”

Dumes has a one shot lead over Kortney McNeil of host MSU Billings and three strokes better than a foursome of golfers after the first round.

She helped the Beavers to third place after one round as a team. MSU fired a 331 overall, five strokes behind Rocky Mountain College and 23 back of MSU Billings, who shot a solid 308 in round 1. MSU is 10 strokes better than Montana Tech.

Katherine McGlenen joined Dumes with a sub-80 round, shooting a 7-over 79 in the first round. She is sitting in a tie for eighth place.

“Katie was able to turn around a slow start to her round and finish strong,” Hilde said. “She was able to grind it out and post a solid number for us today.”

The Beavers had five solid rounds as only three shots separated third and fifth on the team and just 16 stroked spanned first to fifth. Kayla Barke finished with an 88 to sit in 23rd, Kaitlyn Hill carded an 89 for a tie for 24th and Kira Dereniwsky is 29th with a 91.

Minot State will finish off the tournament starting at 9 a.m. this morning.
