Ryan runs away from Glenburn 75-15 to reach district semifinals

The No. 2-seeded Bishop Ryan boys basketball team built up 24-point lead before No. 7-seeded Glenburn could even get on the scoreboard Friday night in a first round District 12 tournament game.

Nine minutes of scoreless basketball for Glenburn (5-15) to start the postseason helped prompt a 75-15 victory for Ryan (18-2) at the Minot Auditorium.

“I thought our team came out with good energy right away,” Ryan coach Brock Teets said. “We got a lot of kids in tonight and one of our messages this week has been that we have to play for each other. Great teams play for each other and I thought tonight we did a good job sharing the basketball and making the extra pass.”

The Lions held Glenburn scoreless in the first period, 22-0, with five different players scoring. Ryan was led by the Bohl brothers with senior Jake scoring 14 points and sophomore Ben, returning from injury, adding 12 points. In total, 10 players scored in the contest for the Lions.

“It was good to see Ben Bohl back on the floor, it was a long time coming,” Teets said. “Seeing (Bohl’s) No. 3 out there meant a lot.”

Before Ryan ran wild in the second quarter with fast break opportunities, junior Kris Vrieze scored Glenburn’s first points with 58 seconds gone in the frame, 24-2. Vrieze had a team-high five points.

The Lions exposed the Panthers unwillingness to get back on defense by racking up 50 points by halftime and led 50-9. It didn’t get much better in the third quarter for Glenburn, as the Panthers were held to a point and Ryan held a commanding 73-10 lead at the end of the period.

Ryan emptied its bench and just ran out the clock in the fourth quarter with a running clock, which allowed the Panthers to outscore the Lions 5-2 in the final eight minutes.

“It was the way the game went,” Teets said. “Second half we backed it out a little bit. We are not here to run it up on anybody. That’s not what we are about.”

The Lions take on No. 3-seeded Des Lacs-Burlington in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Minot Auditorium. Glenburn moves over to elimination side with a meeting against No. 6-seeded Surrey and will try to keep its season afloat at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
