Dakota College at Bottineau wins 10th national hockey title

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Dakota College at Bottineau hockey team has had quite the run in recent years.

The Lumberjacks captured their second straight NJCAA championship Sunday with a 7-4 win over the Erie Community College Kats in a rematch from last season’s title game.

In all, it’s the Lumberjacks’ 10th national title, but will be their last NJCAA title as hockey at the NJCAA level is being discontinued due to a lack of teams.

As far as Sunday’s action goes, Erie opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks responded with three unanswered goals to build a 3-1 lead. The Kats did counter with another goal late in the period to cut DC-B’s lead to 3-2.

The Kats outscored the Lumberjacks 2-1 in the second to tie the contest at 4-4 entering the third period.

The final period was all DC-B. Drew Carriere, Charles Joly, and Harrison Aide each found the back of the net for the Lumberjacks to secure their 10th national title.

“We came out and battled in the third and got the job done,” DC-B coach Travis Rybchinski said in a press release. “We battled through adversity but everything worked out well.”

In addition to Sunday and last season, the Lumberjacks also claimed four straight national titles from 2007 to 2010. DC-B also won titles in 2003, 1998, 1991 and 1986.
