Upper Iowa too much for MSU women

FAYETTE, Iowa — The Minot State women’s basketball team rallied from a pair of double-digit deficits Saturday evening against Upper Iowa, but in the end it was too much to overcome.

Upper Iowa used a late 5-0 run to pull away for a 65-53 win over the Beavers.

“We competed hard tonight but got out hustled on the boards and in some other areas,” MSU head coach Sheila Green-Gerding said. “We ran out of steam in the second half and they took advantage of it. We have to bounce back and be ready to defend our home court Friday.”

Madison Wald paced MSU with 19 points, while Gabby Wilkinson added 11.

The Beavers (3-19, 1-15) will return home to host Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls next weekend.

Beaver men can’t hold halftime lead

FAYETTE, Iowa — Minot State University led by five at halftime, but couldn’t hold that lead, giving up 50 second-half points as Upper Iowa rallied for an 82-67 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s basketball Saturday at Dorman Gymnasium.

It was a tale of two halves in scoring and in field goal percentage. MSU shot 48 percent, hitting six 3-pointers in the first half, but shot just 35 percent in the second. The Beavers held UIU to 48 percent shooting and an 0-for-5 effort on 3s in the first half, but allowed 56 percent in the second half.

“I felt like we let our emotions override our composure in a few critical situations in the second half,” said MSU head coach Matt Murken. “We have to be tougher to continue to make the right play, not try to make the great play. Making the right play is simple, but it’s not easy. It takes toughness to make that play over and over and over. We need to be better at that. My job is to make us better at that. We do that, we finish off more games.”

The loss dropped the Beavers into a three-way tie with University of Mary and Bemidji State for fourth in the NSIC North Division with just six games remaining. MSU is 6-10 in NSIC play and 10-12 overall. Upper Iowa improved to 16-6 and 13-3.

MSU had a strong finish to the first half to take a five-point lead, 37-32. The game went back-and-forth for the first 30 minutes with six lead changes and six ties before Upper Iowa began to pull away.

UIU used a 17-12 advantage on free throws and a 36-26 cushion in rebounding to help earn the win.

Dennis Austin paced UIU with 21 points and six rebounds, while Jordan Hay scored 16. The duo combined to go 11 for 13 from the free throw line in the win.

Luis Ricci Maia finished with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and added two rebounds, a steal and an assist in the loss for MSU. Tyler Rudolph scored 13 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists, while Nathan Mertens finished with 10 points and four assists.

The Beavers will look to rebound with the first two of four straight at home starting Friday with Southwest Minnesota State (8 p.m.). MSU takes on the University of Sioux Falls Saturday (6 p.m.).

Three titles highlight MSU’s second track and field meet

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minot State University finished with two individual champions and a first-place relay team to highlight its second indoor track & field meet of the season at the Concordia College Cobber Duals Saturday.

Jacob Hatfield and Joel Cartwright both captured individual titles and the men’s 4×200-meter team raced to a relay championship. Hatfield and the relay team moved up the MSU all-time list in the process as Hatfield released the second longest toss in the weight throw, while the relay team moved into third place on the all-time list.

“It was a pretty decent meet for us,” said MSU head coach Stu Melby. “We saw some nice improvements over the meet last week. Part of it was getting that first meet out of the way and getting back to competing and part of it was just working off the rust of just practicing all the time. We really like to see a big improvement from the first to the second meet and I thought we did that overall.”

Hatfield earned his title with a throw of 15.61 meters, an improvement of 1.49 meters over his career best. He was joined by two others in the top 6 making it MSU’s best event as Victor Abonyi was fifth overall (14.67) – now is third all-time at MSU – and Kevin Hodges finished sixth (14.07).

“The guys have been working hard and work really well together,” Melby said of his throwers. “We are getting to the point that it is a matter of just putting it together. Technique makes the difference and they were hitting their spots.”

Cartwright continued a strong start to his senior season, winning the men’s 3,000-meters with a seven-second personal best. He finished with a time of 9 minutes, 34.73 seconds in earning his first title of the season.

MSU’s men’s 4×200 relay team of Alex Cundiff, Josh Drew, Daniel Daffinrud and Chigozie Anaukwu raced to a time of 1:32.81 to outrun the competition. Anaukwu and Daffinrud both had a solid days, with Anaukwu placing second overall in the 60 and Daffinrud finishing third in the 200-meters – both earning PRs in the process.

The women’s 4×200 team of Chloe Melton, Shae Pedersen, Erin Winterton and Taryn Love also finished third overall, moving into 10th place overall in school history with a time of 1:52.67.
