Bishop Ryan holds off Hazen late

Alex Eisen/MDN Ryan senior Morgan Kroeger (33) attacks the basket in a Class B basketball game against Hazen on Saturday evening at Bishop Ryan High School. The Lions won 59-49.

The Bishop Ryan girls basketball team held a one-point lead, 47-46, with a little over five minutes left in regulation against Hazen Saturday evening at Bishop Ryan High School.

The Lions maintained their poise and bunkered down in the closing minutes to pull out a double-digit victory, 59-49.

“We showed a lot of grit and I was happy with how the girls were down the stretch,” Ryan coach Julie Stewart said. “With playing DL-B last night, we hadn’t spent a lot of time on (Hazen), but they’re always a very athletic team so I know every year they put together a solid team.”

Annika Stewart led Ryan with 24 points, while McKinlee Harmon chipped in 11 and Morgan Kroeger had 9.

Bishop Ryan is back in action against Lewis & Clark Berthold at 7:15 p.m. Monday in Berthold.

“What this group has been doing is just been falling in love with the day-to-day process,” Stewart said. “That’s what you need to pull it all together. They’ve really improved and continued to improve, that’s really all I ask.”
