Ryan boys basketball rallies to beat Kenmare on the road

KENMARE — The No. 6-ranked Bishop Ryan boys basketball team went into Kenmare Tuesday night and ended the Honkers four-game winning streak to the start the season, which included a one-point victory over Our Redeemer’s in the Velva Invitational Tournament championship on Saturday.

The Lions (2-0) rallied in the fourth quarter to upend Kenmare, 53-50. Ryan trailed at the end of the first quarter (16-12), at halftime (30-27) and at the end of the third quarter (44-40).

Junior forward Anthony Vetter scored over half of Ryan’s points (27) to lead everybody in scoring. The Lions also got strong contributions from senior guard Eli Stewart (11 points) and sophomore guard Ben Bohl (7 points).

Kenmare (4-1) had three players finish in double-digits: Kolton Jesz (18 points), Hunter Rodin (12 points) and Jacob Rodin (12 points).

Ryan is on the road at Shiloh Christian High School next on Thursday and Kenmare is off until Jan. 3 when they will play Divide County.

Magi swimming and diving tops Mandan to stay unbeaten

MANDAN — The Minot High School boys swimming and diving team won its fourth straight dual to start the season against Mandan, 111-75, on Tuesday in Mandan.

The Magi won seven out of the 12 events, including five different swimmers winning individual races.

Senior Gerald Brown was the only repeat individual winner by taking the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a part of the only relay race the Magi won, the 400-yard freestyle, with senior Taylor Miller, freshman William Walker-Rozo and junior Charlie Wentz.

Walker-Rozo (500-yard freestyle) and Wentz (200-yard freestyle) also both won individual events, and the other two Magi winners were sophomore Steve Novak in the 100-yard freestyle and freshman Griffin Schaeffer in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Minot has another road conference dual on Thursday against Williston.

Majettes hockey falls 7-1 against

the defending

state champs

BISMARCK — The Minot High School girls hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, 7-1, on the road against the Bismarck Blizzard.

The Majettes (5-1-0, 5-1-0 North Dakota League) have now lost 10 straight games against the two-time defending state champion Blizzard (7-0-0, 5-0-0 NDL) dating back to Feb. 4, 2012.

Minot was even with the Blizzard at 1-1 after the first period with the Majettes lone goal came from junior forward Lindsey Larson (unassisted).

The Blizzard, however, broke the game open in the second period with four goals and added two more in the third period. Seven different players chipped in to score Bismarck’s seven goals.

Majettes’ goaltender Alex Nelson made 35 saves in defeat.

Minot’s next games are at the invitational taking place at Crookston High School (Minn.) on Dec. 27-28.
