Rugby wins District 11 title

VELVA – The Rugby High School volleyball team captured the District 11 championship on Monday in Velva, defeating Towner-Granville-Upham 3-0. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-22. Both Rugby and TGU will advance to the Region 6 tournament beginning Monday at the Minot Auditorium.

Maria Blessum led Rugby with 11 kills and five aces, while Sara Stier chipped in 10 kills and Abby Volk contributed nine assists. For TGU, Angie Anderson had 11 kills, eight digs and five blocks in the loss and Pru Bray had 18 assists.

Bottineau, Velva-Sawyer punch tickets to Regional tournament

Velva-Sawyer and Bottineau each extended their seasons by winning consolation bracket matchups on the final day of the District 11 tournament.

The Aggies swept Drake/Anamoose 3-0, winning by set scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-15. Jonnah Lee led Velva-Sawyer with 10 kills and four aces, while Dani Craig had 11 assists and Addy Kittelson had 10 digs. Emmy Dockter contributed six kills and Kailey Lemer added 11 digs in the loss for Drake/Anamoose.

Meanwhile, Bottineau beat Newburg/Westhope 3-1 by set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 13-25, 25-22. Megan Olson had nine kills for Bottineau and Christine Wall had 20 digs. Hannah Tofteland had 11 kills and 17 digs in the loss for Newburg/Westhope.
