Upper Iowa sweeps two from MSU baseball
FAYETTE, Iowa – It wasn’t a good weekend for the Minot State University baseball team
Upper Iowa completed a four-game weekend sweep of the Beavers with a twin bill sweep on Saturday.
Upper Iowa won 6-5 and 9-5 in Saturday’s games.
For Minot State, it was a case of not getting the timely hits.
“Offensively, we got a lot of hits,” MSU coach Brock Weppler said in a press release. “We just have to do a better job of getting them when they count. (It) doesn’t neccessarily have to be a hit, get a ground ball or a fly ball, anything to get some runs in. We out hit them that game, but they did better with guys in scoring position.”
The Beavers collected 13 hits in the 9-5 loss in the second contest. Conner Oliver, Jordan Schulz and Geordie McDougall all had doubles in the game for MSU. For the game, Schulz finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Lane Biggs pitched 3.2 innings for the Beavers and was tagged with the loss.
In the opening game, Kendal Daniels pitched six innings, but was the tough-luck loser as Upper Iowa scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
“I thought Kendal threw really well today,” Weppler said. “After the first inning he settled in and allowed two hits in the next five innings and did a great job.”
Schulz finished the opening game with a pair of hits for the Beavers and an RBI. Jarrod Adams and Celestion Rodriguez both hit home runs in the opener for MSU. The Beavers have hit 16 home runs on the season, paced by Rodriguez’s five.
MSU (4-13, 1-3) will host Augustana on Saturday.
