Katharine McPhee on 'Smash': Sean Hayes, a Big Kissing Scene, and Dream Guest Stars
Katharine McPhee, 28, is back to portraying a green-but-ambitious Broadway actress on the drama-packed series Smash. The NBC show is expected to return in early 2013, and the cast is in the midst of filming the second season.
The singer and actress attended Wednesday night's Samsung Galaxy S III concert, headlined by M83, in New York City, and shared some of the latest on-set details. McPhee spoke to PARADE about Season 2 guest star Sean Hayes, her upcoming kissing scene, and her hopes for a Broadway role of her own.
On how filming is going for the second season of Smash.
"It's really going great. We're on Episode 8. We don't air until next year sometime—they haven't given us our date yet. We're just plugging along. I think that the stories are just really great this year. They're kind of refocused, and at the same time there's more music—it's going back to the heart of what the show's about, which is the making of a show. So people really have an inside look of it. And with that comes a lot of drama. It's just been really exciting."
On having new guest star Sean Hayes on set.
"I don't have any scenes with him, unfortunately. I just saw him today on set preparing for a big number that he's doing. He's hysterical, and the number is hysterical. So there's a lot of fun things to look for. "
On former Will & Grace co-stars Hayes and Debra Messing reuniting on the show.
"So far they haven't had any scenes together. I see them all at the table read together and they don't even get to sit next to each other!"
On Jennifer Hudson, another Season 2 guest star.
"She is [done filming her scenes], although you never know if they're going to have her back. She was pretty great."
On the season's fresh feel.
"There's always a different feel the second season because people are more familiar—people kind of have their bearings now, but we have a lot of new people too so there's a lot of that excitement. The energy's still high, but it is different. It's kind of hard to explain. It's like what it feels like to be sophomore versus a freshman. Just more experienced."
On what to expect from Season 2.
"There's going to be a lot of possible love triangles and relationships. There are a couple characters that come in that you think are going to be maybe Deborah's love interest that don't end up necessarily becoming that. There are definitely a lot of twists and turns—lots of people leaving or getting fired."
On new love interests for her character, Karen.
"Yes, there is. In fact, I have a big kissing scene tomorrow, so I won't be eating any garlic tonight."
On her dream guest stars for Smash.
"We had Bernadette Peters, which is huge. She's a legend! It'd be fun to have Wolverine—Hugh Jackman—even if it was just a cameo. That'd be cute. Patrick Wilson's dreamy!"
On watching Broadway shows.
"I haven't in the most recent months. But I do love [them]. I can't wait to go see Jessica Chastain [in The Heiress]."
On her personal Broadway aspirations.
"I would love to just do a play and I could just sink my teeth into — something a little different."
On her dream role in a play.
"I'd love to do an original piece, so I don't know, maybe it hasn't been written yet."
On her new album, which she expects to be out by the end of 2013.
"We've written quite a few songs so we definitely have a vibe and feel. But it really takes a producer to come in and help you sort of complete your vision. That's what I'm looking forward to doing. We haven't gotten to that stage yet. We've gotten through the writing process and then selecting the songs that we think are worth going after within that pool of songs. I find it a very difficult [process]. It's so hard because one sitting you could love the song and then listen to it a couple hours later and then go 'Oh gosh, is this a really good song?'"
