Clara Westerness, 91, Kenmare, formerly of Bowbells and Columbus, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at the Kenmare Skilled Nursing Unit.
Clara Marie Westerness was born June 10, 1923, the daughter of John W. and Esther (Ostenrud) Matson, on the family farm located northeast of Battleview. She was raised on the family farm and attended a country school in the area. As a young adult, she worked as a hired girl on neighboring farms.
Clara married Alvin Westerness in November 1942, at Plentywood, Mont. They made their home on a farm located in Leaf Mountain Township of Burke County, south of Columbus, where they raised their two daughters. They later moved to Bowbells, where Clara enjoyed visiting and playing cards with friends. She also enjoyed helping friends who needed assistance.
Alvin passed away in February 1991. In August 2004, she moved into the Kenmare Baptist Home, where she continued to reside until she had fallen and broken her hip and had to move into the Kenmare Skilled Nursing Unit, where she received wonderful care and was treated like family by their staff and Dr. Jody Olson.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus and attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bowbells.
Her loving family includes: daughters, Genevieve (Jack) Aufforth, Bowbells, and Shirley Driessen, Jamestown; grandchildren, Jon (Tara) Eggen, Dawn-Marie (Jeremy) Johnson, Darci Eggen (Todd Theede), J.R. (Miranda) Aufforth, Raymond (Marni) Driessen and Ted Driessen; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Calvin Matson, Damascas, Ore., and Willard Matson, Devils Lake; sister, Lily Hajj, Lincoln, Neb., and Betsy (Palmer) Bakken, Fargo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clara was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Alvin Westerness; sisters, Ethel, Agnes and Millie; and brothers, Robert, Benny and Delano.
Funeral: Monday, Aug. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells.
Interment: Bowbells Community Cemetery, Bowbells.
Visitation: Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.
Memorials: are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bowbells, or the Kenmare Hospital.
