Louis W. Long, 71, Minot, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, in his home.

Louis Walter Long was born Nov. 5, 1942, the son of Arthur Frank Long Sr. and Malena (Baker) Long, in Minot. He was raised and educated in Minot, graduating from Minot High School in 1960.

Louis enlisted in the Army on Oct. 3, 1961. He proudly served his country as a medic in Germany and Vietnam, and was honorably discharged Sept. 16, 1964. He later enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served for several years.

Following his honorable discharge, he moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he worked as a butcher for a time. He then moved back to Minot, where he worked for Trinity Hospital as a scrub tech in surgery.

Louis married Alice A. Arnold on May 4, 1976, in Minot. From this union, a son, Corey, was born. They made their home in Minot, where he continued to work for Trinity until retiring in the late 1990s.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Minot American Legion Post #26 and the Butte American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting wild turkey and deer throughout the years with his friends and son Corey as well as fishing, and evenings at the VFW Club. Louis spent a lot of time gardening and gave away the vegetables he grew to neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his Chihuahua dogs, Peenuts and Munchie.

His loving family includes: wife of 38 years, Alice Long, Minot; son and daughter-in-law, Corey and Jessica Long, Minot; grandson, Nicholas Arnold Long, Minot; brothers, Monte Long, Gordonville, Texas, Arthur Frank Long Jr., Utah, and Fred "Emil" Motschman, Calif.; sisters, Ilajean (Tommy) Reams, Elk Ridge, Md., Linda Elwood, Peoria, Ariz., and Josephine Ann Kjonaas, Minot; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, James L. Elwood; niece, Billie Jean Kjonaas; nephew, James Ray Elwood; and beloved pet dog, Chihuahua, Peenuts.

Memorial service: Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10:30 a.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign a register on Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Souris Valley Animal Shelter, Minot.
