Young entrants at the North Dakota State Fair's annual cupcake decorating contest ranged from aspiring chefs and experienced gourmands to toddlers who preferred to lick the frosting.
"Is this like being on the Food Network?" Carissa Opperude of Minot asked her son, Beckham, as she leaned over to admire his cupcake decorating skills.
Beckham, 5, had created a cupcake piled with gumdrops and frosting.

"He calls it his Sugar Mud Pie," said Carissa Opperude.
Beckham and his older sister, London, 8, are both sweet treat aficionados.
"His favorite place is Gourmet Chef," said Carissa Opperude.
In the annual cupcake decorating contest, sponsored by Cashwise Foods and Gourmet Chef, Beckham won second place in the cupcake decorating contest for children younger than 6.
London was the champion in the cupcake decorating contest for children ages 7 to 13.
"I like to decorate cupcakes," she said. Her favorite kind is chocolate.
The third place winner in the division for 7 to 13-year-olds was Kaitlynn Simmons, 10.
According to her mom, cupcake decorating is "her world" and she would like to become a cupcake decorator when she grows up.
The kids got to keep and eat their cupcakes. Many started munching before the contest was over.
Champions in the children's contests received gift baskets from Gourmet Chef. Second and third place winners received cookbooks. There was also an amateur cupcake decorating contest for people ages 14 and up. Winners in that contest received cash awards.
