Daniel F. Rieder, 78, Minot, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014, surrounded by his loving family in his home, following a long illness caused by a stroke.

Daniel Francis Rieder was born August 4, 1935, the son of Frank and Mary (McCarthy) Rieder, in Newville. He was raised on the family farm near Egeland and educated in various country schools and later attained his GED. He then attended St. Paul Vocational, where he studied welding. Dan enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1955. He proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged September of 1957. Dan was united in marriage to Beatrice Tofte December 7, 1968, in St. Paul, Minn. They made their home in St. Paul, Minn., where he was employed by Maken's Fabricating. In 1974, they moved to Hibbing, Minn., where he was employed by Ziegler's Caterpillar. In 1982, they moved to the Rieder family farm near Egeland. Dan farmed on the family farm and started Rieder Farm and Field Welding. They continued to reside on the farm until Dan's stroke in 2001, when they moved to Minot.

He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot. He made many friends through the years who helped him cope with his disabilities.

He was a proud grandfather who loved visiting and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a good steward, always willing to assist those in need.

Surviving family includes: wife of 45 years, Bea, Minot; children, Kristen (Matt) Gasperich, and their children, Grace, Nathaniel, Hannah, Felicity, and Eden, all of Aberdeen, S.D.; Amy Rieder and her fiance, Rick Lindberg, and her children, Riley, Chloe, Ethan, all of Minot; and Jennifer Long, and her children, Avery, Connor, and Ella, all of Montgomery, Texas; brother, Terence (Arlene) Rieder, Cando; sisters, Mary (Harvey) Schumacher, Egeland, and Paula Davis, Grand Forks; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan is also survived by his two special friends he has had for over 59 years, Dean Somerville, Minot, and Jerome Stroh, Hot Springs, S.D.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: Wednesday at 3 p.m. at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation: Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Little Flower Catholic Church Building Fund.
