The quest for the best burger needs to go no further than the 2014 North Dakota State Fair. Outside the Commercial II building across from the go-carts is the Westrum Concessions stand selling wild rice burgers to fair-goers looking for something a little different to satisfy their burger hunger.
As part of the 2014 Food Frenzy entries, the wild rice burger is described as a juicy burger patty handcrafted with beef and rice, served on a toasted bun with cheese and grilled onions.
Carlos Martinez, a worker at the stand Monday afternoon, said they have sold a lot of wild rice burgers so far and the stand has been a busy place. "People come back all the time," he added. "They like them."
Carlos Martinez, worker at Westrum Concessions, tries a wild rice burger at the stand on Monday afternoon. The burgers are made as people order them.
"I've eaten them every day," said Alex, who asked that his last name not be used, from the nearby stand selling fresh cut fries.
Martinez said the busy time at the stand has been between noon and 3 p.m. and 7 to 11 p.m. The wild rice burgers are made as people order, so everything is fresh, he added. "It takes around five to seven minutes for each order."
While the wild rice burgers may be a new addition to the State Fair this year, Alex said they have been available at the Minnesota State Fair and are very popular there. "We sold about 2,000 in a day there," he added.
Terry and Kari Kvigne, who were wandering around the fair with some friends and looking for something to eat, didn't need much convincing to try the wild rice burger. Terry raced to the stand and placed an order, convincing his friend Tim Knutson to try one himself, who both in turn convinced two other men to give the burgers a whirl. Soon there was a line of hungry people waiting for a freshly made wild rice burger.
"Mmm, it's wonderful!" said Terry after taking the first bite.
"Oh my God, that's good!" exclaimed Kari, when she asked to try a bite.
"It's really seasoned," added another man nearby who had just tried the burger.
The wild rice burger is $6 and also can be made into a combo meal that includes fries and a small beverage.
