Bruce Smith, 72, Minot, died Sunday, June 8, 2014, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Bruce was born March 13, 1942, in Minot, the son of Homer "Bud" and Ruth (Reigstad) Smith. He was raised and educated in the Sawyer area and graduated from Sawyer High School in 1960. After graduation, he married Esther Schuler. The couple had two sons, Greg and Todd "Bruce Jr." The couple later divorced. Bruce farmed south of Velva until he moved to Seattle. He later returned to North Dakota and began working for Smitty's Lawn Service.

Bruce met and fell in love with Toni Moger Rotter. They were married on March 2, 2007, after 10 years of engagement. He became resident manager of Woodridge Mobile Home Court and Edgeview Estates, both in Minot. He also maintained a "Jack of all Trades" business until ill health forced him to cut back.

Bruce was an active member of the Capri Lounge Pool League and competed in numerous state tournaments throughout the years. He also shot in tournaments every weekend. Bruce loved the outdoors, including riding horses when he was younger, hunting, salmon fishing in his boat in the Seattle area, and especially camping at Mouse River Park. Bruce and Toni would park their camper at the park in May and not bring it home until September spending as much time as possible just relaxing and visiting with good friends.

Family was of utmost importance to Bruce, including his dogs. He was always ready and willing to help anyone. He had an inviting smile, great wink and eyes that twinkled. He could keep everyone at the Trinity CancerCare Center in stitches with his electro larynx announcing that he was there.

Survivors include: his wife Toni, Minot; father, Homer "Bud" Smith, Minot; sons, Greg (Leanne) and Todd "Bruce Jr."; grandchildren, Taryn and Autumn (Taylor) Brown and their son, Bruce's great-grandson, Bennett, all in Washington; sister, Illa (Ron) Smith and Paulette (John) Klungtvedt, in Arizona; brother, Scott Smith, Minot; his faithful four-legged companion, Casey; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bruce was preceded in death by: his mother, Ruth; and two sisters, Williminia "Billie" Thomas and Virginia "Babe" Faul.

A private memorial service will take place.
