Darlene Helgeson, 74, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Darlene Eva Kuntz was born July 4, 1939, the daughter of Mike T. and Florence (Weinberger) Kuntz, in Brein, ND. She was educated in Flasher, ND, and graduated from Flasher High School in 1958. During her high school years, she worked as a nanny for the Plasky family for three years and for the Diekert family for one year. Following her high school graduation, she attended Minot State College, where she earned a two-year associate degree in business.

Darlene met Gaylord R. Helgeson in the winter of 1957. They were united in marriage on Nov. 28, 1958, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. They made their home in Minot, where she worked for Red Owl Grocery, Piggly Wiggly Grocery, and American State Bank. She then worked civil service at the Minot Air Force Base for 28 years. She started as a time controller for all weapons, then spent 20 years as a financial analyst. Throughout her career, she received many awards. Her highest award was a letter of commendation from the Air Force Headquarters. Gaylord passed away Feb. 21, 2012.

She was very active in the St. Leo's School PTA, Bishop Ryan School Board, Boy Scout leader, Little League Baseball coach and pastoral care at Trinity Hospital.

She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America of Minot.

She enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. She enjoyed spending time at her lake cabin and pontooning. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandson. They were the love of her life.

Darlene and Gaylord celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 29, 2008.

Surviving family includes: children, Gaylen Helgeson, Minot, Richard (Darla) Helgeson, Minot, and Lisa (Mark) Bordeaux, Centerville, MN; grandchildren, David and Cassondra Helgeson; Kyle, Lance, and Leah Helgeson; and Ramsey and Alana Bordeaux; great-grandson, Clayton Russell Helgeson; sisters, Michelina (George) Putnam, Minot, Mary (Dennis) Lingert, Bismarck, Cindy (Clem) Nelson, Mandan; brothers, Ronald (Kathy) Kuntz, Bismarck, Virgil (Ruth) Kuntz, Bismarck, Gilbert (Patty) Kuntz, Bismarck; brothers-in-law, Emil (Helen) Helgeson, Maxbass, ND, Marlan (Beverly) Helgeson, Grand Forks, ND; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Bertsch, Minot; numerous nieces and nephews.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 54 years, Gaylord, who was the love of her life; an infant son, David Russell Helgeson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Engvald and Anna Helgeson; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Johnson and Vivian Helgeson; brothers-in-law, Marvin Helgeson, Alley Bertsch, Orval Enget, and Delbert Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot.

Interment: Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Lansford Cemetery, Lansford, ND.

Visitation: Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Lansford Cemetery.
