Sigurd R. "Buddy" Bjornstad found his peace, passing away at the Towner County Medical Center in Cando on Saturday, May 31, 2014.
The 82-year-old local farmer was the eighth child born to Sigurd and Marta Bjornstad near Rock Lake. He was born Oct. 11, 1931. He graduated from Cando High School and attended Wahpeton School of Science for welding and mechanics, skills he has passed to some of his sons. After receiving a medical discharge from the Air Force, he married Dorothy Jensen of Moorhead, Minn., on Dec. 1, 1954, in Devils Lake. They raised their family on their Cando farm. He was involved as a board member of the National Potato Association, Red River Potato Association, American Legion, Baker Electric Board, Sons of Norway, Cando Hockey Association, Farmers Union Board and member of the Cando Lutheran Church. He also made two trips to Europe sharing agricultural techniques during and after the Cold War.
He is survived by: his wife of 59 1/2 years, Dorothy; daughter, Margaret (Doug) Henke, of Cando; sons, Chris, of Cando, Sig (Bella) of Cando, Martin Jens, of Bismarck, Andy (Johnelle) of Westminster, Colo., Teddy (Robyn Spencer) and Peter (Lisa), all of Cando; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, Pete (Joyce) Bjornstad, of Cando; brother-in-law, Ray Reid, of Chinook, Mont.; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Bjornstad, of Devils Lake, and Mildred Matthys, of Moorhead, Minn. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.
Funeral services will be: Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m., at the Cando Lutheran Church.
Burial will be: in the IOOF Cemetery, of Cando, following the service.
Visitation will be: Today from 5 to 7 p.m., with a family prayer service starting at 7 p.m., at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home of Cando.
