Knute G. Knutson, 92, Kenmare, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Knute G. Knutson was born Sept. 23, 1921, the son of Keith and Gunda (Johnson) Knutson, in Rockford Township of Renville County, near Norma. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Rockford Township through the eighth grade. The school was across the road from the family farm. As a young adult, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Following his work with the CCC, he attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton.

Knute enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Aug. 5, 1942. He attended basic training at the Submarine School in New London, Conn., and also graduated from the service school for electricians mates at the U.S. naval training school at Great Lakes, Ill. He proudly served his country during World War II, volunteering for submarine combat serving as an electrician's mate on the USS Tautog. After four successful patrols on the USS Tautog, he was honorably discharged at the end of the war.

Following his discharge, Knute worked for a time as an electrician and then purchased a farm in Rockford Township, one mile from his family's farm. In July 1947, Knute married Vivian Ones in Mohall. They made their home on the farm, where they raised small grains and cattle. Vivian passed away April 3, 1994. Following his wife's death, he continued to reside on the farm until the time of his death.

He was a member of Evanger Lutheran Church, rural Kenmare, where he had served on the church council and cemetery board.

He enjoyed World War II Naval history, hunting, fishing, collecting arrowheads, and studying history.

Those most honored to share in his life: children, Kristine Brekhus, Minot, Eugene (Debbie) Knutson, rural Kenmare, Steven Knutson, Billings, Mont., and Holly (Mike) Beck, Bismarck; grandchildren, Melanie (Tony) LaCorte, Christopher (Sarah) Knutson, Darren Brekhus, Amanda Knutson, Austen Beck, Megan Beck; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Clifford (Phyllis) Knutson, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Victor (Alma) Knutson, Minot; sisters, Florence Nesland, Seal Beach, Calif., and Genevieve Gates, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Knute was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Vivian; sisters, Beatrice Brekhus and Mildred Mugaas; and brothers, Silas and Casper Knutson.

Funeral: Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at Evanger Lutheran Church, rural Kenmare.

Interment: Evanger Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kenmare.

Visitation: Saturday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Memorials: are preferred to Evanger Cemetery.
