Charles Ulven

Charles Ulven, 82, of Tioga, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at his home near Tioga, surrounded by his family and in the care of Tioga Hospice.

Charles Gene Ulven was born Oct. 6, 1931, to Julius and Elva (Smith) Ulven in Lindahl Township, rural Tioga. He was baptized at Lindahl Lutheran Church and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga. He attended Lindahl, Lommis and Wolla schools through the eighth grade, and received his public school diploma in 1947. He enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served as a fireman during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

He married Ginger Hinton in 1956 in Michigan state. The couple made their home in that area where he found work as a mechanic. The couple had two children. They divorced in 1961.

He married Judith Wilson in 1972. The couple had two children. They divorced in 1974. He moved to the family farm south of Tioga.

Charles married Barbara Ament on March 20, 1980, in Williston. The couple made their home on the farm south of Tioga.

Charles worked for 22 years at the Tioga Machine Shop; he retired in 1996. The couple enjoyed travelling a bit to see family.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Charles was also a member of a local bowling league, the Tioga Gun Club, The VFW, Masonic Lodge and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and camping, hunting and fishing along Lake Sakakawea. He was known by his CB handle "Short Snort."

Charles is survived by: his wife, Barbara, of Tioga; sons, David (Joanne) Ulven, of Tioga, and Duane and Charlie Ulven, both of Michigan state; daughter, Elva Ulven, of Michigan state; stepsons, Leon (Trish) Johnson, of Fargo, and Thomas (Shelia) Johnson, of Rhame; stepdaughters, Louisa Johnson (Mark Olson), of Minot, and Evonne Johnson (Bob Roth), of Tower City; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Guy (Dawn) Ulven, of Michigan state; and sisters, Ardella (Laverne) Kerbaugh, of Tioga, and Kathryn (Roger) Henrikson, of Rapid City, S.D.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Marvin, David and Alvern; and nephew, Steven Ulven.

Funeral services: will be Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga. Pastor Rodger Olson will officiate.

Interment: will follow at Lindahl Cemetery, rural Tioga.

Friends may call: at Fulkerson Funeral Home of Tioga today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.
