Ann Biel Brandt, mother and teacher, age 93, of Crosby, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

Ann was born in the Lund's Valley area to Martin and Gertrude Lund on June 4, 1920. Ann enjoyed growing up in a family of 10 children. Ann graduated from Minot State Teacher's College. She went on to teach in Palermo and Stanley. Her first teaching job was in a rural schoolhouse that accommodated several grades per classroom and brought her many lasting memories.

In 1942, Ann married Milford Biel near Stanley. Mel enlisted in the Army and while he was serving in Minneapolis, Ann worked at the Federal Reserve Bank. When Mel began serving the first of his two Army tours overseas, Ann returned to live near family in the Stanley area while teaching elementary school. After living in Stanley, Crosby and Fargo, the Biel family returned to Crosby to establish MiLann Furniture, appliances and flooring. Many family members, friends and business associates came together to help get the business off the ground.

Ann was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, the Kiwanis business club (as one of the first women nationally) and several other area organizations. Ann was also a Girl Scout leader, and many in her family have carried on the tradition of being Boy/Girl Scouts and leaders. After the first furniture store burned and after Mel's failing health, family and friends again helped Ann to make a bold leap to construct a second larger furniture store. The family is eternally grateful to all in community that helped to support these efforts.

On July 4, 1976, Ann married Robert Brandt. Ann and Bob continued working a few more years and eventually spent 15+ winters in the Donna, Texas, area with old and new friends. Time flew and Ann was honored by a Texas grade school for 15 years of voluntary teaching and reading to children. When it was time to live closer to family and health services Ann lived in both Bend, Ore., and Crosby until her passing.

Ann is survived by: her brother, Helmer Lund; sister, Olga Fuhrman; daughters, Marilyn (Jerome) Knudson, of Crosby, Kathy (Dan) Bouchard, of Port Orchard, Wash., and son, Tom (Robin) Biel, of Bend, Ore. Ann has seven wonderful grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all of Ann's dear family, special friends and compassionate caregivers.

Funeral services will be: Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby with Chaplain Myra Osvold officiating.

Burial will follow: at Crosby City Cemetery.

Visitation will be: today, Wednesday, May 21, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Stakston-Martin Funeral home in Crosby and also one hour before the service at the church.
